Take a Break

Nice Girls Get Fat

You’re on a diet and this time you are determined nothing is going to throw you off course. You have a will of steel and you’re going to lose a stone by the summer. Then in walks your mother-in-law brandishing one of her special homemade strawberry cream cakes. Refusing would be impolite wouldn’t it? The last thing you want to do is upset her. So you dig in.

Diet and fitness expert Laura Williams says, “I’ve had a lot of experience of this with clients. A lot of people with weight problems have self-esteem issues and are more likely to put their own needs aside. Also, when people start a diet they feel they can’t just say, ‘no thanks’ to food. Instead they feel they have to justify their refusal to a pushy aunt or mother-in-law. You have to learn that saying ‘no’ is a complete sentence. You don’t have to explain why.”

Laura believes we have to change our mind-set. She says “It’s true that women have a much more emotional relationship with food and are more likely to feel rude about refusing it. But once you begin to say no without justifying yourself, you’ll realise that it’s not rude at all.”
