Love your body!
Fitness expert Laura Williams was a sedentary office worker, smoker and couch potato until 10 years ago, when she decided to change her career and with it her life.
“For years I battled with poor body image but when I started to accept the cards Mother Nature had dealt me rather than pursuing an unrealistic ideal, I started to enjoy my body and really appreciate what it could do for me” she says. These are her five golden rules for learning to love your body:
- Work on the bits you can change but don’t obsess about the bits you can’t. For example, working on your upper body will help to balance out a pear-shaped figure but scrutinising your thighs day in, day out will only make you miserable.
- Don’t let the scales be your master – they’re not referred to as the ’fickle friend’ for nothing. Use them as a guide but never let a scales reading ruin your day.
- Give any new exercise regime at least six weeks - no one really warms to exercise to start with, so enter into any new activity with maximum resolve and minimum expectations. You’ll be amazed at the results!
- Remember that your feelings are not facts - how you perceive your body may be vastly different to how others see you. Accept compliments graciously and consider the fact that the other person may be actually be right.
- Stay out of temptation’s way - you’re only human and the biscuit tin will be calling you after a hard day. Do the kindest thing to yourself and keep your food weakness out of the house.
